Woman of Algiers (after Delacroix)

I often return to the iconic composition of Delacroix’s ‘Women of Algiers’, drawn not only to its structure but to the emotional atmosphere it holds. This work is not a reinterpretation of an iconic painting, but a reclamation. The woman is no longer the object of the artist’s gaze, but the artist herself. Gone is the exoticised sensuality of Delacroix’s orientalist, male lens. In its place sits a figure slightly slumped in contemplation - not submissive, but reflective. This is a portrait not just of a woman, but of a person.”
