Woman of Algiers (after Delacroix)
“I often return to the iconic composition of Delacroix’s ‘Women of Algiers’, drawn not only to its structure but to the emotional atmosphere it holds. This work is not a reinterpretation of an iconic painting, but a reclamation. The woman is no longer the object of the artist’s gaze, but the artist herself. Gone is the exoticised sensuality of Delacroix’s orientalist, male lens. In its place sits a figure slightly slumped in contemplation - not submissive, but reflective. This is a portrait not just of a woman, but of a person.”
