For RIGHTS, Ann Hamilton took her inspiration from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) to create a concordance layout. (The purpose of a concordance is to alphabetize the principal and recurring words in a given text, and to examine the frequency and contextual overlap of those words.) The center spine of Ann Hamilton’s RIGHTS spells out the first sentence of the UDHR, adopted in 1948 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. This same concordance was also utilized in CHORUS, Hamilton’s monumental installation which spans 4,350 square-feet of space at the World Trade Center’s Cortlandt subway stop in New York City.
