According to the Artist
The famed Coenties Slip buildings in lower Manhattan were turned into artists’ studios in the 1950s. Robert Indiana rented his first loft for $30 a month, where he befriended fellow artists Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, Jack Youngerman and James Rosenquist, among many others. Work life and social life mingled in the often poorly-heated buildings, and Indiana commented that he even used to watch Willem de Kooning from his window, painting in the nude. The creative impact of the Coenties Slip group was massive, inspiring an explosion of talent on the 1960s New York art scene.
