According to the Artist
This suite tells a story, giving the viewer a rare glimpse inside the working studios and mind of Andy Warhol. William John Kennedy visited the Factory on several occasions prior to taking a single photograph. He immersed himself into the exciting world that surrounded this charismatic artist, sensing the wave of fame about to envelop the Warhol camp. One particularly busy day, Warhol invited Kennedy to arrive early for a planned photo shoot and observe filming “Taylor Mead’s Ass.” While Warhol filmed, Kennedy photographed, inviting the viewer to step inside Warhol’s usually elusive creative mind. Later that day Kennedy, staged a series of scenes, appealing to Warhol’s playful side. Kennedy then suggested they staple and tape together a homemade sandwich board for Andy to wear, with his just-finished Self-Portrait and Birmingham Race Riot. Warhol loved the concept and eagerly agreed. Throughout the day, Warhol conducted his business-as-usual style on the telephone, while Kennedy continued to photograph the fascinating details, including assistant Gerard Malanga creating silkscreens.
