According to the Artist

One day Kennedy staged a series of scenes, appealing to Warhol’s playful side. Kennedy suggested they staple and tape together a homemade sandwich board, for Andy to wear, with his just-finished Self-Portrait and Birmingham Race Riot. Warhol loved the concept and eagerly agreed.
